Gakuen Heaven (学園ヘヴン) (2002)

Created by Spray in 2002, Gakuen Heaven-Guy’s Love Scramble has received so much attention from BL Games fans. It has a PS2 version and is available fro only 6,800 Japanese yen.

Though the game has a very simple plot, the variance among its characters has rendered the game very enjoyable and exciting. The story begins with the day Keita Itou receives a letter from Bell Liberty institute. Knowing that Bell Liberty institute is an elite institute where acceptance is based on merit and talents, Keita Itou got curious albeit very excited at the news that he got accepted in spite of his mediocre abilities.

In his first day in Bell Liberty, he was introduced to the King and ‘Queen” together with some other individuals. After some time, he found his niche in the institute and has been gotten along well with his classmates. Unfortunately, things did not go as good as expected. Keita Itou has been informed that his admission in the institute has been a mistake and he was told to surrender his slot for other more deserving individual. However, Keita Itou is determined not to give up his place in the institute, which was said to be merely due to his amazing ability in incurring good luck for himself.

Keita went to the Director with the intention of pleading his case. Unfortunately, the Director is away on business and Keita decided to send him an email message. In turn, he was informed that he will be given a chance to prove it through a contest that will determine the MVP of the institute. Keita decided to join in the competition and selected a partner with whom he will have a lot of stories with.

As I have said, a very engaging aspect of the game is the characters it included. Aside from Keita, Niwa Tetsuya is also a central role in this game. He is the King of the institute and holds the highest position in the council. He has become a little conceited because of this and has taken the habit of relegating his duties to Nakajima, the sub-chairman and secretary of the council who was ill-considered by the other individuals.

Another colorful character is Saionji Kaoru, the “queen” who is also the treasurer of the council and can be considered the total opposite of Niwa. Though he is an intellectual, is precocious and graceful, he is physically very weak. In spite of this (or maybe because of this), he has the ability to control and persuade people to his liking. His assistant is Shichijou Omi, his childhood friend and a computer expert and hacker. Shichijou is a very pleasant person and takes great care in protecting Saionji.

Endou Kazuki is a classmate of Keita who is very friendly and sociable. He goes around the individual making friends, thus, he knows what goes around the rumor mills. However, he is not very open about himself and opts to remain mysterious. Naruse Yukihiko is the institute’s most famous play guy. He is a very talented tennis player and has had a wide range of experience not just in sports. He has borne a special attraction for Keita and has relentlessly pursued Keita in every chance he gets.

The other characters included Shinomiya Kouji who is the very talented son of a Shinto priest. He is the archery captain and many classmates are shy around him because of his formality. However, he is good friends with Iwai Takuto, the emotionally-troubled Art Department Director. Taki Shunsuke, meanwhile, is a very energetic and active guy from Osaka. He does get easily intimidated by strangers and is very warm around others. He wants the MVP award as bad as Keita. Lastly, Umino Satoshi is the Biology teacher who has been allowed to enter the competition together with his individuals.

Gakuen’s Heaven-guy’s Love Scramble is definitely another must-play game. Though relatively simple, it has large departure from the prior exciting games from the same plot.

Characters

Itou Keita is the main character of the game. He is by nature optimistic, friendly, and simple. He is extremely lucky and is accepted into Bell Liberty, an all-guys’ institute only for the most elite individuals in the country, even though he has no special abilities. However shortly after he enters the institute, he is informed that he has to withdraw from the institute due to an admittance error on the part of the administration. Unwilling to withdraw just like that, Itou Keita is determined to try his luck at the MVP battle.

Niwa Tetsuya to me is one of the best looking of all the individuals in the entire game. He is the council chairman and extremely popular at Bell Liberty, and hence his nickname the “King” of Bell Liberty. He is a bit self-centered due to his good looks and popularity. The majority of all council work is done by Nakajima, the sub-chairman. He is a 3-dan in Judo, and as such is an skilled fighter and good strategist who never back away from a public fight.

Saionji Kaoru is the council treasurer and plays the feminine character in the game. She is pretty in a feminine manner and is an intellectual genius who is graceful but physically weak; hence he is considered the “Queen” of the institute. He is also a master in manipulating other people, and though a good decision-maker, he usually makes such decisions for personal gain. Shichijou acts as his personal assistant and they have been close childhood friends.

Endou Kazuki is Keita’s classmate. He is the sunshine of Bell Liberty. He is very caring towards other individuals and because he is friendly, he is quick to make friends with Keita, orientating him around the institute and introducing him to the individuals. Because of his sociable nature, he usually well informed of all the rumors going around. It is not clear why he is an individual, and he keeps a lot of secrets about himself which is a mystery to others.

Nakajima Hideaki is the sub-chairman and secretary of the council. He lost the position for chairman to Niwa. Even though he is still adversarial to Niwa, but as they both know each other’s weaknesses, a delicate balance is kept between them for now. He is scheming, devious, and brute, and because of these cold qualities, many other individuals feel fearful in his presence.

Shichijou Omi is Saionji’s childhood friend and assistant, though he is more often that not treated more like a servent by Saionji. Surprisingly, he doesn’t seem to mind being treated like that because he likes Saionji so much. He is happy simply by making others feel happy and enjoys being in good company with close friends and joining interesting events. He is mild mannered and will usually avoid direct dispute with others unless it is in the defense of Saionji. He has a special talent for programming and is an excellent hacker. He is mixed blood and is of mixed French, Japanese, and American heritage.

Naruse Yukihiko is a narcissist from Britain who is studying is Bell Liberty. He is an extremely talent tennis player and has a reputation for being the #1. The moment he sees Keita, he immediately takes a liking to Keita and proceeds to hit upon him whenever he has the chance. But hidden beneath his playful antics and reckless enthusiasm toward winning hearts is a serious side.

Shinomiya Kouji is the son of a Shinto priest, and has many talents. He is the superintendent of Bell Liberty dormitory and is skilled in both literary and military arts. He is great when it comes to household chores as well, be it laundry or cooking. He is also the archery captain and a feather to his cap is that he has won all-Japan guys archery championships. His career ambition is to be a doctor. Due to his upbringing, he is very honest and quiet with a caring nature, but also very serious with morals. Many other individuals feel intimidated around him because he tends to be so formal. But due to his close nature, he has many close friends as well who trust him. Among them is Iwai, a close friend of his.

Iwai Takuto is an artistic genius who has shown unique talent since institute. When he entered Bell Liberty, he is appointed as the art department. He tends to be more of an introvert and doesn’t relate that well to me. Instead he prefers to devote most of his time towards his artistic passion in drawing and painting. He is also excellent in writing, often producing prolific pieces of writing in very short periods of time. He also tends to have a brooding disposition as if he is laden with some emotional troubles. His friend Shinomiya is very close and caring towards him.

Taki Shunsuke is a hyperactive and energetic guy from Osaka. He doesn’t feel any shyness around strangers. He’s very talkative and has a very simple, warm, and sunshine personality. He loves to eat, but is unhappy with the cafeteria at Bell Liberty. His favorite foods are takoyaki and nikuyaki with cabbage. He is a cyclist has won the third place in the trial games of the world championships. He is often seen on campus making deliveries on his bike. He seems to have some quesitonable ties with the Liberty Bell Sub-Director, and also wants to win the MVP as much as Keita.

Umino Satoshi is a Biology teacher and advisor of the science department at Bell Liberty. He lessons are always very sophisticated and he specialized in bio-chemistry research. Although his appearance is very “shouta-ish”, he is actually 24 years old. He has a very spontaneous and energetic personality, and is always in close company with his favorite pet cat, Tonosama. Even though he is a teacher, he is also allowed to enter the MVP competition with individuals.
