Wedding Banquet (1993) 喜宴

Wai-Tung (Winston Chao) and Simon (Mitchell Lichtenstein) are a happy gay couple living in Manhattan. As Wai-Tung is already approaching 30, his parents are pestering him to get married and have a child. To placate his parent’s growing concern about his singlehood, Simon suggests that Wai-Tung marries one of their tenants, Wei-Wei (May Chin).

When they learn about his impending ‘marriage’, Wai-Tung’s excited parents fly down from Taiwan, to hold a magnificent wedding ceremony for their son. Wai-Tung does not dare to tell his parents the truth and goes ahead with the marriage. They go through the customary Chinese banquet. In his drunken stupor, Wai-tung beds Wei-Wei, who soon becomes pregnant. After learning of this, Simon becomes upset and his relationship with Wai-Tung worsens.

Wai-Tung is sandwiched between his real lover, and his customary wife. After a fight with both of them, Wai-Tung reveals to his shocked mother of his relationship with Simon. She keeps this secret from Wai-Tung’s dad, but he finds out anyway, and implicitly accepts his son’s lover. Meanwhile, Wei-Wei asks Simon to stay together with them, and be the baby’s other dad. Both parents soon fly back to Taiwan, leaving Wai-Tung, Simon and Wei Wei to build their unconventional family.
