There are several countries which still consider homosexuality as a great digression to what is normal. This is especially true for Islamic countries with strict religious laws and traditions such as Malaysia. Homosexuality is illegal in Malaysia. It is punishable with long prison sentence of up to 20 years and flogging.
Comolot is said to be Malaysia’s most controversial movie. The movie Comolot, revolves around the issue of homosexuality. It is set against a background of love, desire, secrets, intolerance and difficulties of having a sexual reference that deviates from what is normal. Comolot is written and directed by Amy Ikram Ismail and Mohd Akram Ismail. It was released last July 2007. Due to its controversial theme, the movie cannot be sold commercially. It can only be watched in selected locations and dates.

The story revolves around three people, Danial played by actor Remy Ishak, Juwita played by actress Amiera Sulaiman and Aiman played by actor Ben Quariel. Danial and Juwita seem like a typical couple. Happy and content with the relationship they are engaged and are soon to be married. Unbeknownst to Juwita, though, Danial has a terrible secret. Danial is simultaneously having a clandestine relationship with a man, Aiman. Despite their upcoming marriage, Danial is still continuing his illegal and clandestine relationship with Aiman. It would seem that Danial cannot totally forget his feelings and desire for someone who belongs to the same sex.

A few days before the wedding, Juwita visits Danial’s apartment. The ensuing scenes become the focal point Comolot. Juwita find’s Danial’s apartment in a romantic set up. She hears romantic music and a dinner set up for two. Juwita walks farther into the bedroom and finds two pairs of men’s jeans, condoms and KY liquid all over the bed. She finally walks into the bathroom to find the biggest shock, Danial and Aiman making love in the shower.
The wedding was not called off despite the shocking scene. After all, Danial was in the arms of another man, and not another woman. On the day of the wedding, Aiman appears and creates a scene. Saddened, jealous and angered by the wedding, he grabs Danial by the hand and takes him out of the house. They finally get inside the car and share a kiss.

Comolot touches cultural, social and religious issues. It illustrates the delicate balance between trying to lead a normal life and fighting the desire to break free from society and traditions.
