Kira kira hikaru (きらきらひかる) (1992)

Shoko and Mutsuki get married to satisfy their worried parents, but she is well past the age at which a ‘good’ Japanese woman should marry, and he is in love with a young male.

Kira kira hikaru

The film is less a realistic exploration of gay life than a fairy tale of three young Japanese trying to construct an alternative to the sexual and familial roles given to them by a society turning increasingly emotionally barren.

Later, in a chance meeting over drinks, they divulge their respective dark secrets. In order to get their desperate parents off their backs, Mutsuki and Shoko get married. The illusion of normal married life is maintained. Mutsuki returns from work and kisses his wife on the cheek while she merrily irons the sheets. Yet he still goes out with his college-aged male friend, Kon (Michitaka Tsutsui), and she still resorts to the bottle.
